Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

FM radio was born in 1933 when Edwin Armstrong developed a way of transmitting static-free signals through frequency modulations. What would become Horizon BlueCross BlueShield was also born in 1933 when Newark , NJ hospital representatives sought ways to create both patient- and hospital-friendly healthcare. They incorporated Associated Hospitals of Essex County, Inc., the first multi-hospital prepayment plan that would develop into the country's first Blue Cross health plan. Although the company changed its name to the Hospital Service Plan of New Jersey in 1936, the insurer's identity was already established as the popular "Blue Cross Plan". Blue Shield of New Jersey, which had been incorporated in 1942, merged with Blue Cross of New Jersey in 1986 to operate as BCBSNJ. Several years later, as the healthcare industry changed, BCBSNJ initiated hospital, pharmacy, dental, and managed care networks, specifically HMO Blue which provided managed care coverage. To coordinate the branding of its diverse product offerings, the not-for-profit insurer changed its name to Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey in 1998.

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield issues its products and services through its affiliate companies. Horizon Casualty Services, Inc. offers employers with inexpensive workers' compensation coverage options like managed care and third-party claims administration. It also gives NJ drivers access to specialized auto injury management services and discounted rates. Dental plans are available through Horizon Healthcare Dental, Inc., while Horizon Healthcare Insurance Company of New York and Horizon Healthcare Insurance Agency, Inc. provide traditional health plans, disability products, life policies, and more. Magellan Behavioral Health conducts review and management services for Horizon BCBSNJ customers who are undergoing mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Horizon's core business is supplying traditional indemnity and managed care health insurance to individuals, families, and employers through products like Horizon HMO, Horizon POS, Horizon PPO, Horizon Direct Access, Horizon Basic Plan A/50, and Horizon MSA. Employer groups also have a variety of healthcare options to choose from for their employees, including the consumer-driven MyWay Health Savings Account, Horizon's BCBSNJ Basic Health Plans, BCBSNJ PPOs and HMOs, the Horizon BCBSNJ HMO 100/80 and 100/50, as well as BCBSNJ Direct Access.
