USAA Insurance Company

The coal mining industry was severely crippled in 1922 when the United Mine Workers of America organized coal miners to strike in protest of wage cuts. Another group was also organizing the same year, but for different reasons. Several US military officers came together to self-insure each other when they were unable to attain auto insurance from other insurers because of the assumption that they were high-risk. Thus, USAA, United Services Automobile Association, was born.

USAA specializes in providing military members, their families, and their descendants with a variety of products - property & casualty insurance, banking through USAA Federal Savings Bank , life insurance through USAA Life Insurance Company , and investment services through USAA Investment Management Company . Additional products like credit cards are available through USAA Savings Bank, while USAA Financial Planning Services Insurance Agency, Inc. and Financial Advisors, Inc. offer financial planning advice. USAA members also receive discounts on Avis, Hertz, or Budget rental cars, TeleFlora flower delivery, cruises, home security, home warranties, and FedEx services. These discounts and other merchandise are administered by the USAA Alliance Services Company and the USAA Merchandise Services Company.

USAA Auto Insurance

USAA group is a reciprocal interinsurance exchange that issues automobile and property insurance policies to those who have served in the military or the federal government. USAA is not a corporation and, unlike its competition, does not sell insurance through agents. Policies are sold directly to USAA members by USAA salaried (rather than commissioned) employees.

USAA Car Insurance

The subsidiary USAA-Casualty Insurance Company (USAA-CIC), which is not an insurance exchange but rather a Delaware Insurance Corporation, provides insurance to USAA's associate members. High-risk drivers who do not meet USAA's strict underwriting criteria can be insured through USAA's County Mutual Insurance Company or USAA-General Indemnity Company, while military drivers in Europe can receive coverage through USAA Limited. Other property and casualty insurance is issued through Garrison Property and Casualty Insurance Company as well as USAA Texas Lloyd's Company.
