Nationwide Insurance Company
While Tennessee law was banning the teaching of evolution theory in schools, and officials were arresting schoolteacher John T. Scopes for violating such law in 1925, Ohio law was requiring pledges from one hundred people to become policyholders in the newly incorporated Farm Bureau Mutual Automobile Insurance Company in Columbus , Ohio . The company, later to be called Nationwide Insurance, exceeded the law's demands, beginning operations with 1000 insured customers. In 1928, with the help of local sponsors, Farm Bureau Mutual began offering automobile policies to farmers in West Virginia , then Maryland , Delaware , Vermont , and North Carolina . The insurer began underwriting residents of small towns in 1931, and residents in larger cities in 1934. Through the purchase of a fire insurance company that same year, Farm Bureau Mutual began writing property insurance policies as well.
Nationwide Auto Insurance
The insurance provider had started opening regional offices in 1951, and officially changed its name in 1955. Soon, Nationwide Insurance was truly nationwide, operating in 32 states and the District of Columbia by 1965. In 1978, Nationwide completed its international headquarters, a 40-story structure that was the largest single office building in central Ohio . Having gone public in 1996, and wanting to award the now large city of Columbus with a major league sports team, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company announced plans to build the Nationwide Arena. A successful effort, the Columbus Blue Jackets began playing hockey at Nationwide Arena in 2000.
